There’s Minimal Disturbance to Wildlife

Waiting until the winter minimizes disruptions to wildlife habitats during breeding and nesting times, when they are more active, and vulnerable to disturbance. For example, migratory birds like warblers, sparrows, and thrushes build their nests in shrubs and tall grasses that would be highly disturbed if clearing activities were performed in the warmer months. Clearing in winter, when these animals are either absent or less reliant on surface-level vegetation, ensures we preserve these vital structures for the next active season.

Early Control of Invasive Species

One of the critical benefits of clearing in winter is the control of invasive species. Invasive plants often remain hardy, retaining root systems or seed dispersal capabilities even in dormancy. Winter clearing prevents these invasive species from establishing a foothold by removing them before the spring growth surge. For example, Garlic Mustard can quickly dominate Midwest landscapes, crowd out native plants, and reduce biodiversity. The same is true of invasive plants Japanese Honeysuckle, Common Buckthorn and Purple Loosestrife.

By removing these species before they can spread in spring, we give native plants a fighting chance, preserving the unique composition of local ecosystems and supporting wildlife that depends on native vegetation for survival.

There is more than one way to clear natural areas. Each technique will have its own set of advantages and ideal applications. The approach used often depends on the invasive species’ life cycle and physiology. Let’s look at some common methods and the benefits and drawbacks.

Prescribed Fire

Prescribed fire (sometimes called controlled burning) is an ancient method used to clear dead vegetation, enhance soil nutrients, and stimulate new growth. When executed correctly, controlled burning can benefit fire-adapted ecosystems.

  • Benefits: Fire recycles nutrients quickly back into the soil, creating a rich bed for new growth. Prescribed fire controls invasive species and prevents excessive accumulation of flammable materials.
  • Drawbacks: Controlled burns require skilled professionals and stringent safety protocols. Poorly managed fires can cause unintentional damage or escape control. Prescribed fire may not be suitable for ecosystems not adapted to fire.

In prairies and grasslands, fire is a natural part of the ecosystem’s cycle. A well-planned prescribed fire during winter or early spring helps to curb invasive species spread and promotes the growth of native grasses and wildflowers.

Forestry Mowing / Machine Mowing

Forestry mowing (sometimes called machine mowing or land clearing) is a method of vegetation management that uses specialized heavy-duty equipment to cut, grind, and clear dense brush, trees, and invasive plants on large tracts of land. Specialty mowers shred vegetation into mulch, which is left on the ground to naturally decompose. Forestry mowing is a similar process, but with a broader range of equipment.

Both techniques are commonly used in land development, wildfire prevention, agricultural land preparation, and ecological restoration projects.

  • Benefits: Forestry mowing and forestry mowing quickly clear large areas, leaving a layer of organic mulch that enriches the soil, reduces erosion, and retains moisture. This process promotes healthy regrowth of native vegetation by reducing competition from invasive species. Forestry mowing also improves accessibility for land management, providing clear paths for recreational or agricultural use.
  • Drawbacks: The equipment is costly to rent or operate, and it requires experienced operators to handle rough terrain and avoid harming desirable plant species. Additionally, the process can compact the soil, potentially hindering regrowth if not carefully managed. Forestry mowing and forestry mowing may lead to quick regrowth of invasive plants if the underlying root systems are left intact, necessitating repeated treatments to control certain resilient species.

Basal Bark Treatment

Basal bark treatment is a selective method for controlling unwanted trees by applying an herbicide mixture directly to the lower trunk. This treatment is typically sprayed in a continuous band around the trunk’s circumference, targeting the plant’s vascular system just beneath the bark. The mixture is absorbed throughout the plant, killing it.

Basal bark treatment is especially effective for smaller trees and brush, with trunks less than six inches in diameter. It’s used in forestry, land management, and restoration projects for selective vegetation control.

  • Benefits: Basal bark treatment is precise with minimal soil disturbance. Since the herbicide is applied directly to the plant, it reduces the risk of harming nearby desirable vegetation. Basal bark treatment is effective in treating plants in difficult-to-access areas, as it requires no cutting or mechanical removal.
  • Drawbacks: Basal bark treatment does have some drawbacks. It can be labor-intensive for larger areas because each plant must be treated individually. The treatment also requires careful application to avoid herbicide drift and requires monitoring to ensure that regrowth does not occur. In addition, basal bark treatment is less effective on larger trees.

Hand Clearing of Invasive Species

Hand clearing is a manual method of removing non-native plants and organisms from an ecosystem by pulling, cutting, or digging them out. This technique is used when chemical or mechanical methods could harm native species, or when invasive species grow in delicate habitats like wetlands, riverbanks, or forested areas.

  • Benefits: Hand clearing invasive species allows for selective removal, minimizing collateral damage to native plants and soil, which is crucial in sensitive areas. Hand clearing helps maintain biodiversity by promoting the growth of indigenous plants and providing a safe habitat for local wildlife. Additionally, it doesn’t involve chemicals, so it avoids potential pollution of nearby water sources and soil. Hand clearing creates opportunities for community involvement and can be an educational experience for volunteers.
  • Drawbacks: Hand clearing is time-consuming and labor-intensive. Because it’s slower than other methods, hand clearing may not be effective for controlling large infestations or rapidly spreading invasive species. There is also the risk of incomplete removal, as some plants may regrow if their roots or seeds remain in the soil. It can be physically challenging, especially in difficult terrain or hot weather, limiting its practicality for large-scale or long-term projects.

Grazing

Managed grazing uses livestock, such as goats or sheep, to clear vegetation in a controlled way. Grazing animals can be used to manage invasive species with little impact on the soil, but it’s not necessarily an approach we’d recommend.

  • Benefits: Grazing is an environmentally friendly and cost-effective approach. It can work in hard-to-reach places, but again, there are drawbacks.
  • Drawbacks: Grazing animals need fencing, management, and a rotational schedule to prevent overgrazing and ecosystem degradation. The animals cannot distinguish between a native species and an invasive species, meaning they’ll eat both. Goats are known to eat anything including garbage or the fencing you place in an attempt to control their location. Any sensitive habitats that you are trying to protect may inadvertently be put at risk. For these reasons, we’d recommend mechanical, chemical, or fire approaches over grazing.

Best Practices to Clear Natural Areas in Winter

  • Develop a Strategic Plan: A strategy ensures that efforts are organized, and goals are clear. This reduces over-clearing, and conserves resources while supporting biodiversity. Ensure work is done by an experienced ecological restoration company.
