We're Experts in Restoring Habitats

The goal of ecological restoration is to create sustainable landscapes, allowing nature to thrive. The health of the ecosystem is dependent on the biodiversity contained within, and the promotion of this biodiversity is the essence of the work of ecological restoration. Our process benefits wildlife, but also has benefits for humans and our communities. Restorations provide ecosystem services such as clean water, air, soil, and opportunities like education and recreation.

Renowned as an expert ecological restoration company, Pizzo has earned over 170 industry awards for ecological restoration from specialized associations: American Society of Landscape Architects, Illinois Landscape Contractors Association, USEPA, Chicago Wilderness Alliance, and more. Testament to our team’s hard work and passion towards the environment.

The loss of our local natural habitat is extremely severe and ecological restoration companies are needed now more than ever.

Before Euro-American settlers arrived in the early 1800s, the land which is now Illinois was covered with a 36 million-acre wilderness of tall grasses and wildflowers, wetlands, and forests. Of this 36 million acres, 21 million acres were tallgrass prairie. The tallgrass prairie supported abundant wildlife including bison, elk, wolves, black bears, and hundreds of species of birds.

Within a few short generations of Euro-American settlers’ arrival, over 99% of this biologically diverse landscape had been altered by agriculture and urbanization. Although Illinois still is known as the “Prairie State,” less than 0.01% of Illinois’ original 21 million acres of prairie remains. What once was a vast sea of rich prairie now survives only as tiny, isolated patches. Many species of prairie plants and animals have either disappeared or are in rapid decline due to loss of habitat.

Ecological restoration provides a wide range of habitat, economic, and social benefits. Here are some of the key advantages:

  1. Biodiversity Conservation:

    • Species Recovery: Restoration efforts can help recover endangered and threatened species by providing suitable habitats and resources.
    • Habitat Diversity: Restored habitats support a diverse range of flora and fauna, promoting overall ecosystem health and resilience.
  2. Ecosystem Services:

    • Water Quality Improvement: Wetlands and riparian buffers can filter pollutants, improving water quality for both wildlife and human use.
    • Air Quality Enhancement: Restored forests and grasslands can capture pollutants and produce oxygen, improving air quality.
    • Soil Health: Restoration can prevent soil erosion, enhance soil fertility, and promote the natural cycling of nutrients.
  3. Climate Change Mitigation:

    • Carbon Sequestration: Restored forests, grasslands, and wetlands can capture and store significant amounts of carbon dioxide, helping mitigate climate change.
    • Temperature Regulation: Vegetation can moderate local temperatures through shading and evapotranspiration, reducing the urban heat island effect.
  4. Economic Benefits:

    • Job Creation: Habitat restoration projects create jobs in planning, implementation, and long-term maintenance.
    • Sustainable Resource Use: Healthy ecosystems can support sustainable forestry, fishing, and agriculture, providing long-term economic benefits.
  5. Flood and Erosion Control:

    • Natural Barriers: Wetlands, mangroves, and riparian buffers can act as natural barriers against floods, reducing the impact on human communities.
    • Erosion Prevention: Vegetation stabilizes soil and prevents erosion, protecting landscapes and infrastructure.
  6. Recreational Opportunities:

    • Tourism and Recreation: Restored habitats provide opportunities for eco-tourism, hiking, bird-watching, and other outdoor activities, which can boost local economies.
    • Mental and Physical Health: Access to natural areas for recreation contributes to physical and mental well-being.
  7. Cultural and Educational Value:

    • Cultural Heritage: Many natural habitats have cultural significance for indigenous and local communities. Restoration can help preserve these cultural values.
    • Environmental Education: Restored areas serve as living laboratories for education and research, helping to foster environmental awareness and stewardship.
  8. Resilience to Environmental Changes:

    • Adaptation to Climate Change: Diverse and healthy ecosystems are more resilient to environmental changes and extreme weather events.
    • Ecosystem Stability: Restoration enhances ecosystem stability and the ability to recover from disturbances such as storms, fires, and droughts.
  9. Improved Human Well-being:

    • Quality of Life: Healthy, green spaces improve the quality of life for people living nearby, providing aesthetic value and a sense of connection to nature.
    • Community Cohesion: Habitat restoration projects often involve community participation, fostering a sense of ownership and cooperation among local residents.

Overall, ecological restoration is a vital tool for conserving biodiversity, supporting ecosystem services, and enhancing the well-being of human communities. By investing in restoration, we can create healthier, more resilient ecosystems that benefit both nature and people.

Were an ecological restoration company providing services for properties of all sizes, from private estates under an acre to state forest preserves covering thousands of acres. We utilize heavy machinery for large scale site preparation needs including seed drills and broadcast seeders. For the management of invasive species, we use brush cutters, chain saws, mowers, sprayers, and wicking applicators for targeted herbicides.

For all projects, safety is a top priority. Not only does our crew use personal protective equipment (PPE) but we go to great measures to ensure properties are protected. With controlled burns, our crew leaders are all certified burn managers and the team goes through regular trainings.
