There’s Minimal Disturbance to Wildlife

Waiting until the winter minimizes disruptions to wildlife habitats during breeding and nesting times, when they are more active, and vulnerable to disturbance. For example, migratory birds like warblers, sparrows, and thrushes build their nests in shrubs and tall grasses that would be highly disturbed if clearing activities were performed in the warmer months. Clearing in winter, when these animals are either absent or less reliant on surface-level vegetation, ensures we preserve these vital structures for the next active season.

Early Control of Invasive Species

One of the critical benefits of clearing in winter is the control of invasive species. Invasive plants often remain hardy, retaining root systems or seed dispersal capabilities even in dormancy. Winter clearing prevents these invasive species from establishing a foothold by removing them before the spring growth surge. For example, Garlic Mustard can quickly dominate Midwest landscapes, crowd out native plants, and reduce biodiversity. The same is true of invasive plants Japanese Honeysuckle, Common Buckthorn and Purple Loosestrife.

Without intervention, invasive plants can quickly take over, creating dense patches that limit sunlight and nutrients available to native plants. By removing these species before they can spread in spring, we give native plants a fighting chance, preserving the unique composition of local ecosystems and supporting wildlife that depends on native vegetation for survival.

Soil Health and Disease Management

Healthy soil is fundamental to plant growth. Unfortunately, plant debris from previous growth cycles can harbor diseases and pests that lie dormant through the winter. Clearing dead and diseased vegetation reduces the risk of disease transmission, creating a cleaner environment for the coming year’s growth.

Winter clearing helps manage the layers of organic material that can build up on the forest floor. Excessive debris can lead to soil compaction and poor aeration, negatively impacting root growth and nutrient uptake. By removing certain materials, we improve soil structure, regulate moisture levels, and promote nutrient cycling through natural decomposition.

Invasive woody species such as Common Buckthorn and Japanese Honeysuckle do more than outcompete native plants, they actively alter soil chemistry.

These species are allelopathic, meaning they release chemical compounds into the soil that inhibit germination and suppress the growth of native herbaceous plants. Over time, this reduces biodiversity, weakens the native seed bank, and shifts the soil microbial community in favor of invasive dominance.

By removing invasive woody thickets during the dormant season, we:

Winter is a prime time for removing this build-up of potential fuel, reducing the intensity, and spread of fires that may occur later.

In forested areas and shrublands, clearing reduces what’s known as “ladder fuel.” This is vegetation that can carry fire from the ground to tree canopies. Clear natural areas to protect the area from fire damage and helps safeguard neighboring communities. It reduces fire risk while maintaining the ecosystem’s integrity.

Stimulates Healthy New Growth and Regeneration

Thinning out overgrown areas and removing dead or diseased plants allows new, healthy vegetation to flourish come spring. Winter clearing creates open spaces, allowing sunlight and nutrients to reach the ground level, which can encourage the growth of understory plants and young trees. In turn, this enhances biodiversity, as a variety of plants can coexist without competition for limited resources. It is very helpful for upcoming natural area installations in the next growing season.

Many plants and trees benefit from winter pruning as it stimulates more vigorous growth when temperatures rise. Clearing also helps maintain open areas that are essential for sunlight-loving species, like wildflowers and grasses, which would otherwise be overshadowed by tall shrubs or invasive species. This balance of light, space, and nutrients creates a healthy, diverse landscape.

Tick Population Reduction & Wildlife Balance

Dense buckthorn thickets create ideal humid microclimates for ticks and restrict predator movement. When invasive understory is removed:

  • Wildlife such as opossums gain better access through the landscape and can more effectively forage on tick populations
  • Improved sunlight and airflow reduce moist conditions that ticks depend on
  • Subsequent prescribed fire further reduces tick habitat and provides an additional control mechanism
