One of the most pressing challenges in ecological restoration is invasive species control. Invasive species are often introduced unintentionally, spread rapidly, outcompete native vegetation, and disrupt the balance of an ecosystem.

Targeted herbicide application is frequently used to manage invasive species, but many land managers and restoration advocates want to know whether restoration work be done effectively without herbicides.

Our response is that herbicides, in some form or amount, are still needed. The reasons for this are complex. First, invasive species damage the environment and destroy the habitat, not herbicides. The habitat rebounds when invasive species are removed. We’ll give cultural methods preference over herbicide applications whenever possible, but some species cannot be controlled without herbicide.

At Pizzo Habitat Restoration, our team takes every measure to ensure minimal impact on the environment. We study the lifecycle of each plant we aim to control to know when it is most vulnerable. We select the type of herbicide that will be most effective in controlling the targeted species and use the least amount for effective control, and records are kept. Our application follows the EPA-approved product label. They are measured, mixed, and applied by licensed crews who are highly trained.

Pizzo Habitat Restoration always strives for no herbicide use with our clients. But there are some invasive species that act fast, and herbicides become the only answer. We’ll always try to use the most effective and least impactful herbicides.

If herbicides weren’t used in some cases, the amount of time and labor needed to manually pick each plant could become prohibitively expensive and the results may not be as effective. This is why avoiding herbicides is not always feasible, particularly when invasive plants have already established themselves in large numbers, or when they are resistant to non-chemical methods.

That said, it is often possible to minimize or eliminate herbicide use for some jobs through mechanical or physical removal techniques. They are not as effective as targeted herbicide application for invasive species control, however.

The Problem with Invasive Species

Invasive plants are not native to a particular area and can cause harm to the environment, human health, and the economy. These species can be shrubs, trees, forbs (plants), grasses, vines, aquatic, animals, fungi, or microorganisms.

Their introduction is often due to either intentional or accidental human activity. Effective invasive species control requires prevention, early detection, rapid response, and the right control measures. While complete eradication of invasive species isn’t possible, it can be kept to a minimum with the right practices.

When invasive species take hold, they can change soil chemistry, deplete nutrients, and block sunlight from reaching native plants. They can even lead to problems like increased flooding or erosion. A few well-known examples of invasive species include Japanese knotweed and garlic mustard, which both have biological means of surpassing the growth of native plants in the ecosystem.

When this happens, the animals and insects that depend on the displaced plants for food and shelter suffer as well. For these reasons, managing invasive species is an essential part of any restoration effort.

While invasive species present a risk for the surrounding environment, the methods for removal matter. Herbicides are the fastest method for getting rid of these species, but they must be used judiciously to prevent doing more damage to the area. There are some natural methods for removal that can have an impact, but may not be as effective as herbicides.

Prevention as the First Line of Defense

Preventing invasive species from establishing in the first place is the most effective and environmentally friendly approach. Once an invasive plant becomes established, its removal becomes significantly more difficult, often requiring intensive labor or chemical intervention. Preventative measures, on the other hand, focus on keeping ecosystems healthy and resistant to invasion from the onset.

Regular monitoring is one of the most important steps in prevention. Early detection of invasive species allows for quick action before they can spread widely. For instance, land managers can conduct seasonal surveys to identify and remove new invasives while they are still manageable.

Education is also a vital component. Educating communities about invasive species and how to avoid spreading them can reduce the risk of introduction. One common way to prevent spread is to clean boots, equipment, and vehicles when moving between natural areas.

Healthy ecosystems are also more resilient to invasion. Planting dense amounts of native species that thrive in local conditions helps create a natural defense against invasive species. When native plants leave little room in the ecosystem for invasives to take root, spread becomes more challenging.

Physical and Mechanical Removal

When invasive species are already present, manual and mechanical removal methods offer a chemical-free way to approach the problem. While these approaches can be labor-intensive, they can be effective in smaller-scale restoration projects or areas with moderate infestations.

Hand-pulling is a simple yet effective technique for removing shallow-rooted invasive plants. By carefully pulling the plant by the roots, you can prevent regrowth and eliminate the problem at its source. If possible, plants should be pulled before they flower and seed to prevent further spread.

For species with deeper root systems, digging may be necessary. Digging ensures that the entire root structure is removed, reducing the likelihood of regrowth. Many invasive shrubs can be controlled by digging out their roots.

In larger areas, mechanical removal using tools such as brush cutters or mowers can help manage invasive species. Regular mowing can deplete the energy reserves of some plants, slowing their growth. Similarly, cutting woody invasives repeatedly over time can prevent them from resprouting.

However, physical removal methods are not without challenges. Disturbing the soil during removal can create opportunities for new invasive plants to establish. To mitigate this, it is essential to immediately replant disturbed areas with native vegetation that will stabilize the soil and outcompete potential invaders.

Some areas may be so large, or the invasive species may be so established, that physical or mechanical options may not be feasible. It would simply require too much time and manpower. Because of these limitations, herbicides are often a more effective approach when it comes to restoration and the removal of invasive species.

Using Natural Processes for Control

Another effective approach to managing invasive species is to harness natural processes. Prescribed burns can eliminate invasive plants that are not fire-resistant while promoting the growth of native species that have evolved to thrive in fire-prone environments. Prairie restoration projects often use fire to control invasive grasses and encourage the resurgence of native wildflowers and grasses. Similarly, biological control involves introducing natural enemies of invasive plants, such as goats, insects, or pathogens, to suppress their growth. Biological control is not a quick fix and may not achieve complete eradication, but it can eventually provide long-term suppression of invasive populations. The problem with this approach is that the animal used may not be able to discriminate against an invasive species, and may up damaging natural habitat. For these reasons, we wouldn’t recommend this approach.

The Role of Competitive Planting

Restoration is also about reestablishing native vegetation that can thrive and resist future invasions. After invasive plants are removed, competitive planting can help prevent their return.

Competitive planting involves selecting native plants that are well-suited to local conditions and planting them densely to create a robust, self-sustaining ecosystem. For example, in areas where invasive grasses have been removed, native grasses and wildflowers can be planted to stabilize the soil and provide habitat for pollinators. The natural methods mentioned above are all essential for restoration efforts and winter clearing. But even with these efforts, herbicides are necessary to keep invasive species under control.

For example, invasive plants with extensive underground root systems can be nearly impossible to control through physical means alone. Similarly, large infestations that cover several acres may be too labor-intensive to manage without chemical intervention.

Herbicides should always be used judiciously and carefully. A restoration project might use targeted herbicide application to go after specific invasive plants, followed by reseeding the area with native species to prevent reinvasion.

Best Practices for Responsible Herbicide Use

When herbicides are necessary, their use should be guided by principles of precision and environmental stewardship. The goal is to apply the smallest amount necessary to achieve the desired outcome, targeting invasive plants while minimizing harm to surrounding habitats.

One important practice is spot-treating individual plants or small clusters rather than spraying entire areas.
