Argonne National Laboratory is a federally funded research and development center in Lemont, Illinois, United States. Founded in 1946, the laboratory is owned by the United States Department of Energy and administered by UChicago Argonne LLC of the University of Chicago.
Argonne proactively champions practices which conserve energy, divert waste, conserve water, reduce fuel consumption and reduce pollution. Their detailed sustainability program shows a strong commitment to sustainable solutions for campus operations which include Argonne’s Environmental Protection Program and Natural Resources Program.
Argonne’s natural beauty and walkable campus fosters the laboratory’s groundbreaking research and supports an active culture. The cutting-edge facilities are nestled among hundreds of acres of wilderness and connected by a walk-friendly campus with a motto of “Walk. Run. Explore!”
Hundreds of acres of wilderness are a lot to handle and require on-going maintenance to ensure the outdoor beauty and functionality is maintained. Argonne needed an experienced ecological restoration company with a deep understanding of natural sustainability practices to help ensure their environmental program remains a continued success.
Since 2008, Pizzo & Associates has been the vendor of choice Argonne’s natural area stewardship. Starting with an initial clearing through hand and forestry mowing to help with the restoration and transitioning into a combination of both clearing and prescribed fire to help with invasive species and encourage more plant growth when the growing season returns. Supplemental planting of native plants was done throughout the corporate campus. With each year, the native wildflowers continue to become fuller making it a gorgeous outdoor space.
The corporate campus to open to the public on weekdays with pre-authorization needed. Once on-site, you can see the natural beauty of the land and intentional outdoor features to encourage both an active culture and help with sustainability practices. At Pizzo & Associates, we’re happy to help provide the stability of a trusted environmental partner focused on quality work. Be sure to check out their events with a popular one being an Earth Day Celebration.
