Geneva Park District’s Peck Farm had 48.5 acres of old soybean field that they wanted converted to a natural area, including wet prairie, mesic and upland zones. Peck Farm Park is a unique park found in an urban environment that offers residents and visitors a place to slow down and enjoy quality time surrounded by 385 acres of nature.
The area was seeded with eighteen pounds of native seed per acre installed with a Truax® drill to reduce soil disturbance. Ongoing stewardship included mowing and the use of selective herbicide to control invasive species, which in turn allows natives to establish. Monitoring the project by way of plant surveys and photo points were conducted to confirm the project’s success.
This land is absolutely flourishing and a stark difference from the tired soybean field we met on day one. With a generous blanket of native blooms the landscape serves as a necessary habitat for pollinators and other wildlife while offering a joyful aesthetic.
