Owners at Graceland Cemetery needed help to manage their landscape and wanted sustainable, natural magnificence to create a supportive environment for visitors of all varieties. Graceland Cemetery is one of Chicago’s finest hidden treasures on the North Side. The serene yet vibrant park-like cemetery was designed by visionary landscape architects which includes O.C. Simonds. Graceland has a rich history and provides a beautiful place for generations to come, sharing a common mission with Pizzo.
Creating a functional ecosystem and tranquil landscape at Graceland Cemetery in Chicago, Illinois was an honor for our team at Pizzo & Associates. We implemented a multifaceted approach to this restoration which included removing invasive species, collecting and dispersing seed, performing prescribed burns and ongoing natural area stewardship. Prescribed burns help to manage invasive species by ridding their dominance and clearing the land for native plants to establish, which will remain dormant if conditions will not support them. Our goal was to completely rejuvenate the area to create a calm, functional landscape harmonious with local nature.
This prairie is stunning and the clean winding trails carved throughout make it a wonderful place to wander and spend time in. Our team created an expansive landscape that supports biodiversity, fosters ecological balance and offers a peaceful, sustainable environment for reflection and remembrance.
