The phragmites australis situation at Stop 19 in Long Beach, a neighborhood access point to Lake Michigan beaches, was inundated with this highly invasive species. Pizzo & Associates was present at the town board meeting with a discussion on what to do about the location. The municipality had tried many different methods with various landscape companies with no luck. Pizzo was hired to embark on a mission to finally eradicate the phragmites.
In the summer of 2023, Pizzo leveraged appropriate and water safe treatments to kill the species in order to create a blank slate to work with. In the Fall, native dune grass was planted at the site. Though early in the restoration process, the results are optimal. No phragmites are present and the dune grass is thriving. We continue to provide ongoing stewardship and monitoring with the engaged town.
The beach access point is a welcoming site filled with native plant life.
