Sunstar contributes to enhancing healthy life expectancy and quality of life (QOL), starting from good oral health to preventive medicine and holistic wellness. In order to address challenges faced in our society, they’ve constructed and shared business models that minimize the impact of products throughout their life cycle and maximize the use of limited resources so that the global environment can be sustained. With a sustainability focus, the company sought out help to restore wetland at their Schaumburg location.
Prior to Pizzo’s arrival at Sunstar, a neglected remnant wetland existed on the property. The Village of Schaumburg, known for its strict regulations regarding wetland protection and native plant use, presented an opportunity for positive change. Pizzo, recognizing the ecological value of the wetland, spearheaded a transformation project. This initiative not only ensured compliance with local regulations but also yielded a thriving natural area exceeding 5 acres. To maintain the health of this ecosystem, Pizzo incorporated prescribed burns into the management plan, a technique that mimics natural processes and benefits native plant communities.
Restored wetlands with native plants offer numerous environmental and ecological benefits, including enhanced biodiversity, improved water quality, and increased resilience to climate change. Native plants provide habitat and food sources for local wildlife, supporting a diverse range of species. They also play a crucial role in filtering pollutants and excess nutrients from water, reducing runoff and preventing erosion. Additionally, wetlands act as natural water storage systems, mitigating flood risks and maintaining groundwater levels. By sequestering carbon, they help combat climate change, while also offering recreational and educational opportunities for communities.
