This client asked that the natural areas of their residence be completely revived. Our team at Pizzo & Associates formulated a plan to enrich each area with a custom selection of plants tailored to the specific conditions of the land and that are historically native to Berrien County.
After a full introduction to this beautiful land in Lakeside, Michigan, Pizzo & Associates collected seed from native plants already present in the natural areas. Then, our team implemented controlled burns where appropriate to rejuvenate the soil and reduce competition from invasive species. Invasive species were controlled through cultural methods, physical removal, or the application of herbicide. Native plants, now given the opportunity to flourish, took advantage of the competitive release created by these measures. We ensured all restored areas were mowed where necessary and dispersed the collected seeds into the open areas after burns. Continued stewardship involved monitoring and managing invasive woody and herbaceous flora. Natural areas were enriched with supplemental native seeds and a customized mix of thoughtfully chosen native plants. We included 726 plugs of perennial forbs, shrubs, ephemerals and grass species throughout the prairie and woodland.
This land’s ecosystem is now balanced, beaming and abundant with pollinators and happy plants native to Berrien County. The landscape will greet visitors with four varieties of stunning asclepias, wild ginger, lead plant, purple giant hyssop, jack-in-the-pulpit and many more productive natives.
